Who was Ada Lovelace and why is she famous in computing?

Ada Lovelace is famous because in 1843 she published notes on Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine that described how a machine could follow step-by-step instructions to calculate Bernoulli numbers and she also explained that such a machine could work with more than just numbers.

What Ada Lovelace did

1843: translated an article about Babbage’s Analytical Engine and added extensive notes of her own

Note-G: included a worked method for calculating Bernoulli numbers on the Analytical Engine, often cited as an early example of a computer program

Explained a key idea: a machine like the Analytical Engine could operate on symbols as well as numbers which links to modern computing where data can represent text, images and sound

Why this matters for computing

The Analytical Engine is widely described as a programmable general-purpose computing concept

Ada’s notes are used in computing history because they describe instructions, sequencing and what we now call programmability in a way that maps cleanly to how software works today
